Chronology of cameras Butcher
The Royal Mail Stamp Cameras have a very limited use, contributing to their rarity today. They are designed to reproduce a photograph, a carte de visite, or a cabinet-sized photograph in 15 copies the size of a stamp, on a quarter-plate format.
It resembles a mahogany box, with the front face pierced with 15 holes for 15 meniscus lenses. The shutter is a simple plate, also perforated with 15 holes, which slides behind the front face to cover the 15 holes. There is no focus adjustment. An extension composed of two arms supports a vertical wooden plate to which the photograph to be reproduced should be attached. This extension varies depending on the type of photograph to be reproduced:
- Model No. 1 is intended for direct photography (the functioning of which is not clear).
- Model No. 2 allows the reproduction of a carte de visite (CDV).
- Model No. 3 is designed for reproducing cabinet-type photographs.
These extensions are interchangeable and sold separately.
Inside the camera, vertical and horizontal dividers create 15 small dark chambers.
